The Scarlet Letter

""Good Master Dimmesdale," said he, "the responsibility of this woman's soul lies greatly with you. It behooves you, therefore, to exhort her to repentance, and to confession, as a proof and consequence thereof."" (Nathaniel Hawthorne, 46)

The Scarlet Letter discuses the time period in which Puritans gained freedom from the English, and have now their own rules and regulations. The punishment of Hester Prynne, was a lifetime of shame and guilt for committing adultery, by the requirement of wearing a scarlet letter "A" on her chest on every piece of clothing she owns. In the beginning of the novel, the author does not mention the man who Hester sinned upon. The high authorities of the Puritan society in Massachusetts, Boston try to compel Hester to confess the name of her mate. She refuses countlessly, so keep the name a secret. This quote states the conversation of Governor Bellingham querying the powerful Reverend Master Dimmesdale to propose a punishment in which Hester Prynne will serve. Also, Master Dimmesdale must discover the man she has sinned with. This is ironic, because later in the novel, readers uncover the truth of the man's identity. That man is no other than the priest, Master Dimmesdale. The burden is left on his shoulders, since he is so pure and plain, and also the least expected to sin. Dimmesdale does not confess his mistakes, but hides clues in his house. Nathaniel Hawthorne does this, to surprise the readers. It was certainly not expected for the priest, also the man who listens to others' confessions, to be the one who sinned.

By: Rene Lynch
Source: The Los Angeles Times

The great factor about Thanksgiving is obviously the feast! Everyone gathers around the dinner table, expresses what he or she is thankful for, and then they enjoy their evening. The most tempting part of the meal is certainly that juicy, savory, delicious turkey sitting in the middle of the diner table. As the days get closer to Thanksgiving, one is ultimately enthusiastic for the wonderful dinner their family is preparing. During the feast, one does not realize the amount of carbohydrates they consume, considering the rich and appetizing flavor that produces an everlasting desire. To stay fit one must stay away from those carbohydrates! One way to maintain a diet will be to choose one carb per meal throughout the day. Another way is to avoid buying large drinks with whipped cream from coffeehouses, such as the popular Starbucks and Coffee Bean. One can enjoy breakfast without disturbing one's diet by eating English muffins instead. Before gathering one of everything off the table, consider the right portions of each serving. Most people have difficulty maintaining that aspect of their diet, because of the heavenly cuisine that rests in front of them.  By following some of these guidelines, one will have a drastic change in their form and shape.

Puritan Religion

Souces: http://fervis.tripod.com,
http://www.history.com/topics/puritanism

During the 1600s, Puritans left England for free religious practices. Religion was an important part in every Puritan child and adult's life. They had excessively harsh and ordinary rules in which all must follow. Puritans were very ordinary and traditional people. They believed that God had chosen them for a special purpose. God was their one and only leader. All must follow him, and if not they had many harsh punishments for those who sinned. Puritanism was a religious movement for improvement, which happened due to the Church of England. Puritans were very strict when it came to the subject of religion. They were willing to punish anyone if their rules were not followed. Every Puritan did not have a say when they were expected to attend meetings on the Sabbath. They prepared for the Sabbath the night before their meeting. It was considered their sanctuary, because they had specific rules that were to be done on it. Discipline was conducted towards all Puritans; one form of discipline was the obligation to read the Bible everyday. They had specific seating in the church; men and women sat on separate sides, and boys sat away from their mothers. The slaves and servants entered the church but sat away from everyone near the exit door. They were rigid during church hours. The minister would start the service with a prayer and proceeded with an emotional sermon.

"I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read"
By: Francine Prose
Analyzing and comprehending a piece of literature are extremely important factors in interpreting the text. A simple way to break down the text in a piece of literature can be to use the SOAPST. In the essay "I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read," Francine Prose is the speaker. This essay was published in the year of 1999 September in Harper's (occasion). Prose wrote this essay to appeal to everyone (audience). It is much necessary for people to understand the problem with education today. She grabs her audiences' attention by giving them evidence in the beginning of her essay. The purpose "I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read," was written was to inform and to persuade the people the bad decisions they are making with the literature reading lists for high school students. The main idea Prose accomplishes in this essay is the critique of quality of required reading for high school students (subject). To catch the reader's attention she appeals to ethos as a mother of two sons (automatic ethos). Yet, the audience is unaware of the fact that she is a professional writer (building ethos). The evidence that is used throughout the essay was from surveys and the summaries of each novel, which showed her knowledge for the stories (appeals to logos). The tone she gives throughout the essay is familiar (easy to understand), disappointed, and certainly sassy. Also, her essay was noticeably bias towards changing the educational reading system.

"Twins study shows smoking ages your face faster"
By: Steve Almasy
Source: CNN

How could the thought of harming one's own body not frighten one? Yet more and more people begin to smoke cigarettes everyday. Smoking is certainly non-benefinal to the human body. It can cause lung diseases or cancer. Smoking can lead a person to a long, painful, and difficult demise. Why continue? Study shows that a long-term smoker can age one's face faster. An ordinary and consistent smoker can be distinguished from one who does not smoke at all or one who occasionally smokes. Two doctors and a medical student conducted this study using twins. Researchers divided the pictures into two categories: one being a twin who smoked and the other did not, and a separate category being one twin smoked at least five years longer than the other. The first category proved that fifty-seven percent of the smoking twin appeared older than the non-smoker twin. Afterwards, experimenters took a look at the second group, which verified that twin who smoked five years longer resembled aged sixty-three percent of the time. To be more accurate the study also considered other factors of aging such as, alcohol consumption, stress, and sunscreen use. Smoking definitely does transform the way someone looks immensely. Why take the risk? Lessen the chances of receiving those diseases and physical differences by staying away from cigarettes.

Education

"To what extent do our schools serve the goals of a true education?"

After attending a private school for the past twelve years, I have learned that although we are taught English, history, and basic mathematics, we are not taught what I believe is of utmost importance which is being able to use skills in order to manage in the real world. Learning how to become "street smart" is far more important than learning the basic subjects taught in high school. These subjects can serve to broaden one's knowledge, but will not help with paying taxes or even buying a house. These are two main factors of independence; it is difficult to do so if you have you have not been taught how too. Experience is one way someone can learn to avoid making the same mistakes. Teachers should include more hands-on lessons, so that the students can comprehend correctly, and become more fascinated from the exercise that was being conducted. Most students that leave high school are still undecided with their future plans. After having real life experiences with each subject it will be easier for the student to narrow it down to their favorite subject. Social skills are extremely crucial for everyone. One must be able to converse politely with those around them. Coming from a small high school, I am surrounded by students of the same ethic group as I am. Interacting with other races is essential in becoming an individual. Also critical thinking is one very important skill that should be taught in every school. Having and expressing your creativity shows off your characteristics.

"Saturated fat pledge 'a drop in the ocean'"
By: Department of Health
Source: BBC News

Obesity has become a major problem spreading around the world like a virus. More and more people have started to eat in fast food restaurants daily, due to the cheaper prices. Fast food restaurants have started to become a bit healthier, yet enjoyable for consumers.  The Department of Health (DoH) has created a fight against obesity though a pledge amongst food manufactures. This pledge is said to cut the saturated fat levels, in order for fast food customers to consume a healthier meal. A top public health expert has said the decrease in in saturated fat levels will be considered "a drop in the ocean." By following this rule, many people can become healthier and fit; it can also save lives, if conducted in one's diet daily. The Department of Health has made it clear so that an average man eats no more than thirty grams of saturated fat per day; the average women eats no more than twenty grams per day. However, according to the British Dietetic Association, people eat twenty percent more saturated fat then should be consumed. Strokes and heart diseases are two of many consequences that are led by consuming an excess amount of unhealthy foods. This can be prevented by cutting down fifth-teen percent of saturated fat in one's diet (avoids about 2,600 deaths each year). Almost half of the food manufacturers have been following the latest pledge, towards a better and healthier process. This pledge can save many lives, for an improved diet and superior life ahead.

"California Kids Are Drinking Less Soda"
By: Alexandra Sifferlin
Source: Time

The United States is no longer the most corpulent country in the world. Mexico has taken over that reputation, due to the amount of unhealthy foods being consumed every year. Children in California drank many cans of soda each day. The newly generation of children have been cutting back from the sugary and harmful beverages, that were once the most commonly consumed refreshment. Many children have also neglected sports drinks, such as Gatorade or Powerade, today. California Center of Public Health Advocacy reported that children under age twelve drink less soda drinks and sports drink in 2011 to 2012 rather than children in the state during 2005 to 2007. The  statistics conducted for this report was the evidence shown in the 40,000 homes investigators observed. They revealed that only 32% of children aged six to eleven consume beverages such as soda daily in 2011 to 2012. During the years of 2005 to 2007 43% of children that age consumed soda daily. Only 19% of kids aged two to five drank soda (2011-2012), other than those kids during 2005 to 2007 (27%). Kids over the age twelve consume 65%, but earlier it was 60%.
It is impressively surprising to know that children nowadays have become a healthier group, compared to children in the earlier years. It is remarkable to hear that children have more knowledge on becoming healthy and keeping their body in great condition, starting at such a young age. Fitness is extremely important in one's life.

"Remarks on the Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr." by Robert F. Kennedy

Annie and Arus' speech presentation was accurately analyzed. They did a wonderful job presenting all aspects of the speech by using the SOAPST, ethos, pathos, logos, and the claims. Each slide displays a great amount of information for each aspect (perfect length). The SOAPST are precise with correct information including every part.  Not only did Annie and Arus demonstrate a perfect analysis of the speech, but they also included literary devices such as anaphora and polysndeton. During the presentation last week, Annie and Arus did a wonderful job by keeping eye contact with the audience and explaining each slide of their PowerPoint without reading it straight off the board. They showed the audience that they really knew what they were talking about, creating a persuasive effect. The speech was about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Robert F. "Breast Cancer Screening Qs Answered"
By: Dr. Otis Brawley
Source: CNN

The month of October is dedicated to breast cancer awareness. Dr. Otis Brawley notified CNN news there may be a solution to avoid breast cancer. He is a cancer expert, author, and chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. In the 1960s, doctors speculated mammography screening would cure breast cancer patients. In order to recover, a patient needed the mammography screening to be combined with effective treatment and an early detection of breast cancer. Statistics proved their theory considering a loophole. After various trials (eight large clinical trials) doctors verified screening does save the lives of women at the age of fifty to sixty-nine. Women around the age of forty to forty-nine, unfortunately with not be cured after using the mammography screening (data was unclear). Medical organizations recommend one to start screening ate age forty or fifty; most of those organizations advocate yearly screenings or every two years. Dr. Brawley answers several questions in the article, such as: Why is mammography a better test for older women? He declares older women tend to be cancer patients and due to their age the mammogram it is easier to detect the cancer (cancer appears white in the X-ray). Research based data proves that 20%-35% of deaths for women aged 50-70 are reduced. Younger aged women do not have that option because screening is inadequate (20- 40 aged). Women should not do screening until they reach the age fifty.

The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence is an astonishing and breathtaking piece of literature that was written by Thomas Jefferson. It is a beautifully written argument stating the eighteen complaints against King George the third. Jefferson's diction and use of vocabulary words creates an astounding effect for the argument. The Declaration of Independence is a type of argument that uses the combining of induction and deduction. This document was written to rebel against King George the third. Thomas Jefferson uses evidence towards the end of his argument (induction) and lists eighteen complaints in the beginning (deduction).
"He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only," Jefferson states in his third argument. This argument accomplishes to declare that King George the third only allowed the English to pass laws. Another argument given was, "He has called together legislative bodies at places, unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance." This was the forth argument expressed by Jefferson, explaining the long and tiring travels people had to take in order to attend the meetings that were held in far away locations.
Today's laws are much more reasonable due to The Declaration of Independence written by Jefferson. The meetings are held in more convenient locations and laws can be passed by the government creating a peaceful society amongst the people.

By: Matt Hamilton
Source: The Los Angeles Times

Yellowstone National Park service is investigating the murder of an innocent 3-year old Idaho girl. The girl was shot on the Yellowstone campground, officers were informed on September 8, 2013. On a Sunday at 5:39 P.M. the young girl's mother tells the officials that her daughter shot herself. She used a classic handgun to perform suicide. Ever since 1978 at Yellowstone National Park, a murder has not occurred. Carrying a gun with one while in a national park is legal because of the passed amendment by senator Tom Coburn. This became a law in February 2010 after President Obama signed it. However, releasing a bullet in the National park is not permitted and is also a crime. Yellowstone National Park is one of the most visited and popular national parks in America. It was also the first national park ever established (year of 1872). It is the home of grizzly bears, wolves, and herds of bison and elk. "Each year, more than 3 million people visit the park," The Los Angeles Times states. The identity of the 3-year old child will stay a secret until Monday, September 9, 2013, at the request of the victim's family, Al Nash told The Los Angeles Times.

"Speech to the Troops at Tilbury"
By: Queen Elizabeth

Comprehending and breaking down a peice of literature is important into analyzing the text. By using the universal SOAPST, a strategy used for reading and writing, one may easily destinguish the purpose and setting of the text. SOAPST stands for subject, occasion, audience, purpose, speaker, and tone. This method helps one clarify and organize their thoughts about the text.
Queen Elizabeth writes a speech to her troops to warn and comfort them about the upcoming battle. She tells them that they are not alone in the fight, and that she will be with them through all the difficult times. Queen Elizabeth is equal with her people. She clarifies that through her speech by using the words "we" and "us". The subject of "Speech to the Troops at Tilbury" is the war that England will be entering. The occasion is the Spanish Armada invasion that took place in the year of 1588. The audience of Queen Elizabeth's speech is her military troops. The reason why this speech was written (purpose) was to encourage and to inspire the people. Queen Elizabeth the first is the speaker of this speech. She uses a calm, hopeful, comforting, assured, authoritative, and honorable tone as she gives this speech to her troops. Another way to analyze this speech is by using the Aristotelian triangle.

In the city of Toledo, Ohio abortion has come to an end. The last abortion hospital is forcefully being shut down, due to doctor Wis. agreeing to stop the operation. Doctor Wis., in Green Bay, has lost his clinic to the local hospital. The government has become stricter with abortion clinics, threatening to close down others in at least five states. Doctors urge many hospitals to allow the abortion process. Mainly, female doctors have been affected by this law with different perspectives rather than the older male population. This article encourages legalizing abortion clinics around the world. To some irresponsible teenagers, abortion is necessary without a doubt. Professionals and highly educated doctors do not want abortion to become illegal. In a way, abortion is helpful to many women. Even though abortion goes against Christian beliefs, some women do not want to go through with the pregnancy and the life changing experience of having a child. Many women have gone on strike, because of this situation. Professionals highly recommend hospitals that allow the performance of abortion to continue the procedure with their clinics. Those that have closed down the clinic are suggested to reopen and allow clients a variety of options.

Favorite Book

The Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie has to be one of my favorite books. It is suspenseful and incredibly well written. Agatha Christie being an extraordinary writer herself creates an arcane and mystical setting where the novel took place in. The setting took place on a train headed to Stamboul during winter. I enjoyed reading this novel because it was extremely interesting and erratic. From the beginning, The Murder on the Orient Express captures one's attention and keeps them guessing. The novel begins when the main character Hercule Poirot was assigned to investigate a murder case. Passengers on the train were informed that a man named Rattchet, also known as Cassetti had been killed. Cassetti was a criminal himself, who had kidnapped Daisy Armstrong. Because the murder took place on a train all passengers on the Orient Express were questioned about what happened the night of the murder. In the end, detective Hercule Poirot concluded that the murderer of this case was all the passengers. They planned this murder against Cassetti, because each of them had a connection with Daisy Armstrong and wanted revenge.
One who enjoys reading mysterious and thrilling novels would definitely want to read The Murder on the Orient Express. Agatha Christie wrote the novel in a way that will keep the audience wanting more. Once one begins reading they will not be able to put the novel down. It will always leave one wanting more. Readers will be full of suspense and astonished by the ending.
