"To what extent do our schools serve the goals of a true education?"
After attending a private school for the past twelve years, I have learned that although we are taught English, history, and basic mathematics, we are not taught what I believe is of utmost importance which is being able to use skills in order to manage in the real world. Learning how to become "street smart" is far more important than learning the basic subjects taught in high school. These subjects can serve to broaden one's knowledge, but will not help with paying taxes or even buying a house. These are two main factors of independence; it is difficult to do so if you have you have not been taught how too. Experience is one way someone can learn to avoid making the same mistakes. Teachers should include more hands-on lessons, so that the students can comprehend correctly, and become more fascinated from the exercise that was being conducted. Most students that leave high school are still undecided with their future plans. After having real life experiences with each subject it will be easier for the student to narrow it down to their favorite subject. Social skills are extremely crucial for everyone. One must be able to converse politely with those around them. Coming from a small high school, I am surrounded by students of the same ethic group as I am. Interacting with other races is essential in becoming an individual. Also critical thinking is one very important skill that should be taught in every school. Having and expressing your creativity shows off your characteristics.
Street Smart is important, but those basic subjects are important also. Street smart and basic subjects are needed in everyday life. I agree on where students should interact with other races and should be more social to be ready in the real world after high school. Overall the blog was terrific but I believe “ethic” is actually spelled “ethnic” but other than that wonderful job Nicole.

ReplyDeleteNicole has brought up a hand full of wonderful examples that present her opinion regarding education in schools today. One of the interesting points she brought up was the deal regarding the “street-smart” aspect. I wholeheartedly believe that this is one of the most essential factors of being able to “survive” in the real world. Cool blog, Nicole!
ReplyDeleteBringing in "street smarts" to whether school is giving us a proper education, helps immensely for Nicole to defend her points. Interacting with other races is something that a sheltered private school student does not get to do as frequently, say, a public school student. Overall, the blog was well written, brought good pots, and did a great job at proving a point. Great job Nicole.
ReplyDeleteI agree that being street smart is substantially important in maintaining a successful lifestyle, but I would have to argue that the basic, boring education that we receive on a daily basis could also be useful. However, Nicole, it was an interesting read. Great job with sticking to your side and proving your point.
ReplyDeleteGreat Job Nicole! "Street Smart" is a good way you described the actual knowledge that people need in their daily lives instead of history or other subjects which cause boredom and are useless. The way Nicole described and explained her reasons on levels of education will grab the attention of most students, because majority would agree with her.
ReplyDeleteApart from sciences and mathematics, schools should offer a wider variety of subjects to match different interests. Students must have a choice and be able to study in their field of interest. Only then will they be able to transfer what they have learned into the real world. This would be the true form of education.
ReplyDeleteThis blog has both very spot-on points and points that many would argue with. "Street-smart" individuals will get through life much easier than book smart students. The book smart students will in turn have an easier time with their studies and usually with work. Just like everything else in life, one must find balance. Too much of anything can have negative effects. It is about applying oneself in regards to both aspects and trying hard to achieve the balance.
ReplyDeleteThis blog connects with almost all of the audience giving examples, referring to private school separation. Everyone should be involved with different ethnic groups to get a feel of the real world. One term that caught my eye, "street-smart" individuals with a greater knowledge of being street-smart will make decisions much easier than someone who has only been taught things strictly through text books. It all comes down to balance, schools should teach both street-smart and book-smart material to broaden each students future.
ReplyDeleteI believe that being street smart is a very important aspect of dealing with daily life. However, the subjects taught at school are just as important. Very we'll written. Great job Nicole!
ReplyDeleteMany people revolve around the same mindset as Nicole when regarding education and knowledge. Once in a while, in actuality, people do doubt the education system due to the fact that they solely believe being “street smart” is more important than common knowledge and facts. Astonishing job on this blog, Nicole !
